During the next few months, it is important to be aware of you and others safety around pools, lakes, ponds, oceans, and more. Here are tips to help ensure you are prepared for water safety:

Achieve skills of water competency:

Water Competency has three main components: water smarts, swimming skills, and helping others.

Water smarts encourages taking precautions when you’re around water, including never swimming alone, knowing your limits, knowing who to call for help, and adjusting to the water environment.

Swimming skills consists of being capable of entering the water, getting a breath, staying afloat, changing position, swimming a distance, and exiting the water safely. It is suggested that you learn to do this in different water environments to gain experience.

Helping others consists of paying attention to children or weak swimmers near the water, knowing the signs of drowning, knowing ways to safely assist someone drowning, and knowing CPR and first aid. Knowing these can help you and your family avoid any emergencies.
