988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Much like 911, people can use this number when they feel their mental health is causing them to be depressed, overwhelmed, and in immediate danger. When people call or text 9-8-8, they will be connected to trained counselors, who will listen to the caller’s problem, provide support, and connect them to resources if deemed necessary. The lifeline’s network of over 200 crisis centers has been proven successful since it started in 2005. Therefore, beginning July 16th, 2022, 9-8-8 will be accessible everywhere in the United States.
